This might be useful to someone running a gopher server on top of /alex as the combination lets gopher users browse the subset of the anonymous ftp namespace that the server knows about. An interesting implication of all this is that since the Alex server learns new hosts and filenames from the people who use it, the links you make are fed back into it.
